Patricians vs. Plebeians

What are some of the similarities and differences between the Patricians and the Plebeians in Ancient Rome?

  1. The main differences between the Plebeians and the Patricians is that the Plebs are lower-class citizens and the Patricians are upper-class citizens. Initially, the Plebeians had barely any rights, but they made up most of the Roman citizens. They could not be consuls, or the top government officials. They could not hold office. They had less of a social status. Most and them were artisans, shopkeepers, and small farm-owners, whereas the Patricians were wealthy landowners, could hold public office and be consuls, could veto laws, and could be praetors, or judges in court. Also, the Patricians had the rights to make laws and rules, and the Plebs couldn't. Finally, the Plebs went on strike and gained their rights. They could hold public office, become consuls, and could even marry the Patricians, which they couldn't before. The Romans finally treated each other as equals.

  4. Patricians were the more wealthy class. They had larger farms and could hold office in government. They had a group called the Assembly of the Century. Patricians could not marry plebians. Patricians were the minority of Romans.
Plebians were the lower class. They had less money and had virtualy no power. Plebians were the majority of Ancient Rome. They could not marry patricians. They also had a group. There's was called The Assembly of the Plebs.
They both could vote and be dictators. They both could also serve in the army. But also in both classes woman had no say in anything. They both did their right as citizens and payed taxes too.

  5. Both patricians and plebians payed taxes. All patricians and most plebians owned land. They both had jobs.
Patricians were very wealthy. That was the main difference. Patricians would be like the celebrities rich and owned land. Patricians were also the government. Until later of course.
Plebians were the shopowners and the farmers. So the plebians basically did everything and the patricians spent their money. Particians were like all of us. The plebians were complainers and said that they wanted a share of the government and after awhile they got to be in the government.
I like the plebians though. They were cool.

  6. plebeians were the poor citizens-
at first they didn't have many rights but then they were not even being able to vote, to being able to hold office!
patricians were the wealthy citizens- and they didnt work hard
they had always had more rights than the plebeians. and never had the time to give people the right items or jewelry!

  8. The Plebeians were the poor one but i thought it was unfair the classes that they put them in it was not right to know someone for their class! Patricians are the rich cruel one not all were cruel but most of them were because they thought they were better that someone. I think that the all had a great part in community and Rome if it weren't for politic the things that happened wouldn't happpened!

  10. Pater Familias: The family was structured in the same way in both classes. The head of the family was the oldest male. That could be the father, the grandfather, or perhaps even an uncle. Everybody in one family livedSame-
under one roof. Women had no authority except in the home. Old age was honored.

Atrium: Life in the home of wealthy tradesmen and patricians centered around the atrium, the central courtyard.

Slaves: If they could afford it, both classes had slaves to do the work.

Citizenship: The citizens of Rome were adult freemen from both classes plebs and patricians. Women, children, and slaves were not citizens. People from all classes considered themselves Romans.

Religion: Both classes worshiped the same gods and attended religious festivals.

Language: Both classes spoke the same language, Latin.

Forum: Both classes enjoyed the activities in the Forum, including the many free activities such as jugglers

PaThe patricians were the rich landowners. They would often have a house in the city and a villa in the country that was run by slaves. Those who were well-off lived in townhouses with central courtyards know as atriums.

Archeological evidence suggests that even the wealthy Romans did not have much furniture. Wealthy Romans ate on low couches in a reclined position. They were known to have large banquets where much food was consumed and the reclining position would help them digest the food!!!

    Plebians-

Plebeians were the working class of Ancient Rome. They typically lived in three-or-four story apartment houses called insulae. The insulae were often crowded where two families would have to share a single room. There were no bathrooms in the apartments, so a pot was often used. The pot would be emptied out of the window into the streets, creating very unsanitary and smelly conditions around the apartments. The apartments were built from wood and often badly constructed. It was not unheard of for a building to collapse or start on fire. Slaves in patrician households often lived in better conditions than was found in plebeian apartments!!!!
